MB&F LM FlyingT Tiger Eye. The third edition of the Gem series.
First introduced in 2019, the Legacy Machine FlyingT is MB&F's first machine designed specifically for women. It embodies elegance and dynamism that transcends feminine soft traditions. The Legacy Machine FlyingT, winner of the Best Ladies' Complication at the Grand Prix de la Horlogerie de Genève, is available in three different 18K white gold versions. Then in 2020, they launched a limited edition in red gold and platinum with a guilloché dial, and a sixth edition with a lapis lazuli dial and an 18K white gold case set with diamonds. Last year, MB&F added a malachite dial version, and today, MB&F presents this masterpiece with a gorgeous tiger-eye dial.
This is the third in a series of gem releases that MB&F releases annually. After lapis lazuli and malachite, is the stunning tiger-eye dial. Tiger's Eye is a gemstone that is brown-gold to brown in color, silky lustre, translucent and opaque with an iron pattern. Tiger eye is mainly produced in Australia and South Africa. Tiger eye is composed of silica and is mainly colored by iron oxide.
Powering this new version is the same calibre as the soaring vertical structure of the FlyingT movement, topped by a 60-second flying tourbillon. The sun-shaped winding rotor ensures that the automatic movement is fully wound, providing a power reserve of 100 hours.
The time is displayed by delicate serpentine hands on the sloping subdial at 7 o'clock, visible only to the wearer of the watch; the unconventional layout emphasises the privacy and personalisation of the LM FlyingT.
MB&F Legacy Machine FlyingT. The first ever MB&F ladies watch. When MB&F shared with us their first women's watch, they made an unexpected and very surprising move. The creative process behind the just-released MB&F Legacy Machine FlyingT began four years ago, when Maximilian Büsser started thinking about making something influenced by the women in his life. "I created MB&F to do what I believe in, to make three-dimensional sculptural kinetic artwork that releases time. But at some point, I had a desire to create something for the women of my family. I've been surrounded by their influence all my life, So I challenged myself to do something for them," says Büsser. “The last thing I want to do is take a masculine watch, resize it, paint it a different color, and call it a ladies watch.”
Each MB&F piece is brought together in a complex process that incorporates the original Max Büsser concept, the design skills of Eric Giroud and the mechanical ingenuity of the in-house technical team. Aesthetic and philosophical coherence is critical to the end result, from the adventurous Horological Machine N°5 "On The Road Again" to the highly complex and technically ambitious Legacy Machine Perpetual.
The new MB&F Legacy Machine FlyingT is available in three different versions:
The Black Lacquer Edition (in our live photos) is set with 168 diamonds totalling approximately 1.7 carats. It has 120 diamonds on the case, 21 on the clasp, 1 on the top of the tourbillon cage, and 26 on the crown—the prototype we shot was missing those diamonds on the crown.
The Full Pavée Edition is set with 558 diamonds totalling approximately 3.5 carats. 390 on the dial, 120 on the case, 21 on the clasp, 1 on the top of the tourbillon cage, and 26 on the crown.
Finally, the Baguette Edition includes 294 baguette-cut diamonds and 3 brilliant-cut diamonds. Dial set with 134 baguette-cut diamonds, case set with 124 baguette-cut diamonds, buckle set with 12 baguette-cut diamonds, crown set with 24 baguette-cut diamonds and 2 brilliant-cut diamonds, top set with one diamond Tourbillon cage. The total weight (in carats) for this particular model is approximately 8.2 carats.
To maximize the sophistication of the women's Legacy Machine FlyingT, the original Legacy Machine case has been completely redesigned with a reduced case thickness and diameter to shift the focus to the highly protruding sapphire crystal top. Additionally, the lugs are slimmer, with more prominent curves and deeper bevels. The new LM FlyingT features an 18K white gold case with a diameter of 38.5 mm and a thickness of 20 mm, with a domed sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides.
The LM FlyingT has two crowns, one on each side of the strap. The crown on the left strap is used to wind the watch, and the crown on the right strap is used for time setting.
The privacy and personalization of the MB&F Legacy Machine FlyingT places the time indication at the final 7 o'clock position on the dial, with the black or white lacquered dial tilted 50 degrees to face the wearer. As the name suggests, the flying tourbillon is only fixed at the bottom, and there is no stabilizing bridge at the top that limits lateral movement. This increased need for overall rigidity is what causes most flying tourbillons to be conservatively placed in their movements. Breaking through this restrictive need for movement safety, the Legacy Machine FlyingT confidently displays its flying tourbillon in all its glory and makes things even better with a bright cut at the very top of its frame.
The asymmetrical ventricle opening on the dial forms the heart of the Legacy Machine FlyingT movement, whose extraordinary flying tourbillon beats at 2.5Hz — 18,000vph. Protruding high above the rest of the stacked movement, the tourbillon is a dynamic column that stops at the apex of the sapphire crystal dome. On top of the upper tourbillon cage is a large brilliant-cut diamond that rotates at the same time as the flying tourbillon, radiating the fiery brilliance of the finest gemstones.
The subdial at 7 o’clock is black or white lacquered – depending on the model – and displays the hours and minutes via a pair of elegant blue-gold serpentine hands. The dial features black or white Roman numerals that contrast with the main colour of the dial.
Flip the watch over to reveal a delicate oscillating weight in the shape of a three-dimensional red gold sun with sculpted rays. This automatic movement, conceived and developed in-house by MB&F, consists of 280 parts and 30 jewels. When fully wound, the movement offers an excellent power reserve of over four days – approximately 100 hours. The oscillating weight is made of 18K 5N red gold, titanium and platinum.
Legacy Machine FlyingT's design is full of associations with the influence of women and motherhood in Maximilian Büsser's life. Büsser said: "I wanted the LM FlyingT to have the epitome of femininity reflected by the women in my life, especially my mother. It had to combine supreme elegance with great dynamism. The columnar structure of the flying tourbillon was very appealing to me. It's important to say because I feel very strongly that women are the backbone of humanity. At the same time, the sun-shaped rotor has another layer of meaning that incorporates a life-giving element, a source of sustenance that we are drawn to and around. .” The new MB&F Legacy Machine FlyingT comes with a black or white alligator or calfskin strap (depending on the model), secured by an 18K white gold pin buckle set with diamonds.
